PEC has a culture that both challenges someone to grow and learn in their career while also offering opportunities to advance rather than stagnating. I like the fact that we are not so large of a company that the normal worker gets lost in the minutiae, but we are also large enough to be an established industry leader in our field. Being with PEC, I have learned many concepts and skills outside of my Electrical Engineering degree. Specifically, I have carried out major installations at various customers throughout the industry, broadened my understanding of PLC systems and purchasing/design, and actively managed a team to meet the various needs of both install and service for our US customers. Additionally, this work has given me the opportunity to travel to many interesting locations in the world that I likely would not have gone to normally. Since my studies were more theoretical in nature I did not have much practical experience. When I started working here I had to learn the ins and outs of the formation systems PEC produces, this helped me to become a better engineer. When I was working for only a month, I was assigned to provide the firmware for a new small project on my own. This trust gave me a great boost in motivation and confidence and I’m glad that the project went well. When talking about PEC’s culture, It is not a cliché to call it diverse, we have co-workers from many countries, which does keep work life more interesting. Everyone comes in and gives their best daily; people are not afraid to work hard, especially at a project finish. A special characteristic of our office is that one can basically call or talk to anyone directly if they need help, no need to get an appointment, no matter their role. Since I’ve been in the company for a while I’ve been able to see most projects phases personally by now, which is something very exciting, and includes: from discussions with clients and suppliers, to on-site follow-ups at custom part manufacturers and also customer installations. As a mechanical engineer, it was nice to be involved in real useful work from the start. I was 3D designing parts and quality checking them at the supplier very early on, which was motivating. Especially during project work, engineers have a relatively large autonomy and responsibility in constructing parts of a certain machine; most of the designs are not shelved”, but actually implemented. This makes the work done feel valuable. In the recent years, PEC has grown to a multinational company. But one still doesn’t feel lost, as might happen in a giant enterprise, most of the colleagues know each other personally.
